Chi (Χ) and Rho (Ρ): the first two letters of ΧΡΙΣΤΟΣ, set one over the other. One of the oldest Christian monograms, and one of the plainest. No image, no ornament. Just the Name.

After St Constantine saw the sign of the Cross before the battle at the Milvian Bridge in 312, he had a new standard made for his army. Eusebius saw it and described it: a gold-covered spear crossed by a bar, a wreath of gold and precious stones at the top, and inside the wreath these two letters. The Romans called it the labarum. Constantine later wore the same letters on his helmet.

An emperor set the Name above his army. Train under the same Name. “Every man that striveth for the mastery is temperate in all things” (1 Corinthians 9:25). The athlete disciplines the body for a crown that fades. We train for one that does not.
