Great Martyr Tank Top

St George the Trophy-bearer.

Great Martyr. George was a Roman officer in the imperial guard, a commander with rank and a future. When Diocletian moved against the Christians, George gave all his wealth to the poor, freed his servants and confessed Christ before the emperor. They tortured him to make him deny. He would not. He bent his neck beneath the sword on 23 April 303, and the Church keeps his feast on that day.

Τροπαιοφόρος, Trophy-bearer: the soldier who carries the spoils home. His victory was not over an army. It was over fear, torture and death. The dragon under his spear is the old serpent (Revelation 12:9), the enemy every Christian fights.

Across the back is Albrecht Dürer's woodcut of St George and the dragon, cut in Nuremberg in the early 1500s, restored line by line and set under one word at full width: ΜΕΓΑΛΟΜΑΡΤΥΣ.

“Liberator of captives, defender of the poor, physician of the sick, champion of kings: Trophy-bearer and Great Martyr George, intercede with Christ God that our souls be saved.”

Apolytikion of St George, Tone 4
