The rider is the oldest image of the warrior-saints. George, Demetrios, Theodore: Roman soldiers the Church paints mounted and armed. Their strength was real, and it answered to Someone greater. Not one of them won by force. They won by refusing to deny Christ, unto death.

Across the back, in Greek, Mark 10:45. Christ says it when James and John ask for the seats of honour in His kingdom (Mark 10:35–45). The other disciples are angry. He tells them all that whoever would be great must be the servant of all, and then shows them what He means.

The Son of Man came to serve. So does every man who carries His name. That is strength under command.
