St John Vatatzes the Merciful. Emperor of the Romans in exile.
When the Crusaders sacked Constantinople in 1204, the Roman state survived at Nicaea. John III Doukas Vatatzes ruled it from 1221 to 1254. He won back ground in Asia Minor and the Balkans, built churches, monasteries and hospitals, cared for the poor, and laid the foundation for the City’s recovery in 1261. The Church remembers him as St John the Merciful. Feast: 4 November.
A popular Greek tradition holds that his hidden relics wait for the liberation of the City, the sword at his side slowly leaving its scabbard. An emperor the people never stopped waiting for.
