Tradition holds that King Abgar of Edessa, sick and hearing of Christ, sent asking Him to come. Christ pressed a cloth to His face and sent back His own image. The Mandylion was kept at Edessa for centuries and carried to Constantinople in 944. Feast: 16 August.
