For a thousand years the Greeks did not need to say which city. Constantinople, New Rome, the Queen of Cities, was simply the City. Founded by St Constantine in 330; fallen on Tuesday, 29 May 1453.
On the back, the full two-page woodcut of Constantinople from the Nuremberg Chronicle of 1493, rejoined across the book's spine, with the name set huge beneath it.
