ΑΣΚΗΣΙΣ. Training: of the body, and of the soul.
Askesis was the Greek word for an athlete's training. The Desert Fathers took it for the daily discipline of prayer, fasting and watchfulness, and it is where the word "ascetic" comes from.
On the back, St Anthony the Great, Father of Monks, carried into the air and set upon by demons, from Martin Schongauer's engraving of around 1470. He came through it and lived in the desert past a hundred. Feast: 17 January.
