Greek Fire "Hygron Pyr" Tee
The secret of the City.
Around 672 an architect named Kallinikos fled from Heliopolis in Syria to Constantinople, bringing a liquid that burned on water. Pumped through siphons from the prows of the Roman dromons, it broke fleet after fleet that came against the City.
Emperor Constantine VII Porphyrogennetos wrote to his son that it had been revealed by an angel to St Constantine the Great and must never be given to any foreign nation. It never was. The recipe is lost to this day.
The back carries the miniature from the twelfth-century Madrid Skylitzes of the Roman fleet burning the ships of the rebel Thomas the Slav.
