In 626 the Avars and Persians besieged Constantinople while the emperor was away at war. Patriarch Sergius carried the icon of the Theotokos along the walls, and the City held. Her people gave thanks with the hymn that still opens the Akathist: Τῇ ὑπερμάχῳ στρατηγῷ, “To thee, the Champion Leader.”
The back sets the full kontakion in Greek and English beside the Theotokos of Vladimir, painted in Constantinople in the twelfth century, above the Moldovița fresco of the siege (1537).
