Prayer Sword — Luke 22:36 Oversized Tee

A sword from a distance. A prayer rope up close.

“He that hath no sword, let him sell his garment, and buy one” (Luke 22:36). Christ says it at the Mystical Supper, hours before Gethsemane. The disciples take Him literally and show Him two swords. He answers, “It is enough” (Luke 22:38). That same night Peter draws one and cuts off a servant's ear. Christ heals the ear (Luke 22:51) and tells him to put the sword away: “all they that take the sword shall perish with the sword” (Matthew 26:52).

So which sword? The one St Paul names: “the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God” (Ephesians 6:17). The enemy is not flesh and blood (Ephesians 6:12). It is the passions, and the one who stirs them.

For the Orthodox Christian that sword hangs from the wrist. A prayer rope, one knot for every Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me. From across the room, a blade. Up close, every knot of a komboskini.

“Flog your enemies with the name of Jesus, for there is no stronger weapon in heaven or earth.”

St John Climacus, The Ladder of Divine Ascent, Step 21

Luke 22:36 fills the back in all-capital lettering with an illuminated red initial, above a deep-red sketched prayer rope shaped into a sword. A black double-headed eagle stands alone on the left chest, without text.
